The Original Equipment Suppliers Aftermarket Association (OESAA) has delivered yet another successful Autoinform LIVE workshop training event, keeping the content fresh and relevant for delegates in a constantly evolving industry.
With the 2017 show held once again at the GTG Academy in Wolverhampton last weekend, over 200 industry professionals attended the UK’s biggest workshop training event, with sessions delivered by OE suppliers and well-respected industry figures.
Automotive training expert, Frank Massey was on-hand to deliver training sessions on future technologies and industry issues, such as ‘Pumping losses’ - the mechanical inefficiency of a gasoline engine caused by the position of the throttle – and vibration analysis.
Talking about Autoinform LIVE, Frank said: “We’ve been involved with training for about 30 years now, and we decided to give it a brand – Autoinform – which provides education based on our experience and knowledge gained in the industry.
“The event changes every year, and each time we try to put a different ‘flavour’ on it; for example, we might concentrate on ignition, common rail or emissions, which is a really big issue at the moment.
“It means we have to do a lot of research – which is great for us – and to-date it’s been really well received. We’re getting good numbers and the right calibre of people: those who want to progress and succeed in the industry.”
Schaeffler’s Technical Services Manager, Malcolm Short added: “We try to refresh the event every year, with more presentations, updated content and new suppliers.
“The garages love that this event takes place at the weekend: we did a survey after the Edinburgh show and people responded overwhelmingly that they wanted it on Saturday and Sunday as it meant they weren’t taking time out of their busy working weeks.”
With the seminar schedule divided into three categories, Autoinform LIVE 2017 gave delegates the option of booking the program which best suited their requirements.
Acoustic partitioning helped to eliminate distractions from the other training sessions, with many of the classes utilising a professional audio system. Presenters lead such sessions using wireless microphones to delegates in over-ear headsets to help cancel out unwanted background noise.
Malcolm continued: “The headsets, which we introduced last year, are great if you’re in a busy workshop. This year we coordinated the event so that two people weren’t presenting side-by-side, keeping background noise down.”
OESAA Chairman, Nigel Morgan said: “Malcolm works with the suppliers to make sure that the training we provide is interesting and topical for our delegates every time.
“However, the reason we continue to organise these events remains unchanged: as technology evolves it really is the OE suppliers who are best placed to support the people who are fitting our products.
“Roughly 50-60% of attendees come every year because they recognise that technology moves on so quickly, and we give them the knowledge they need to stay ahead of the game.”

Delegates wanting to do the Double Clutch IMI assessment need to attend the presentation (listed in Group 1 & 2 but Group 3 delegates can swap a session) and carry out a multi choice questionnaire before the hands on individual assessment .
The IMI certificate which is normally £30 will be funded by Schaeffler.
The presentation will cover all 4 gearbox types available but the assessment will only be on one type so we need to know which type the delegates want to be assessed on.

With just days to go until this year’s Autoinform LIVE event at the GTG Academy in Wolverhampton, delegates from previous shows have shared their feedback on what they think makes the event so worthwhile.
Taking place on the 25th and 26th November, this year’s event features 24 timetabled training seminars, each delivered by an OESAA-approved coach, and covers topics such as new MOT legislation, double clutch technology and maximising profits through marketing.
Last year’s Autoinform LIVE attracted over 400 industry professionals, making it OESAA’s most successful show to date. Attendees were only too happy to submit their encouraging feedback, either via email or on OESAA’s social pages.
Andrew Fowkes of Tony Fowkes Automobiles got in touch to say: “Just to say thanks to all the team for the weekend. We honestly thought it was the best one yet. We were buzzing the whole way home.
“Our only regret is just doing the one day and not the whole weekend – we shall certainly do the whole weekend next year.”
Attendee Dean Andrew took to Facebook to tell OESAA: “Excellent, informative weekend. I’ve come back to Cornwall with a shopping list and an insight into how to improve our business.”
And Simon Tarbox from Pan Auto Services got in touch to say: “Just thought I would drop you a line to thank you, and say how factual and well organised the show was.”
Commenting on the positive feedback, OESAA Chairman, Nigel Morgan said: “The very fact that previous delegates have been so happy to share their experiences of last year’s Autoinform with us demonstrates the hunger for knowledge-enriching events of this nature.
“This year’s show will endeavour to bring attendees up-to-speed on the latest developments within the industry, in terms of new technology and recently-introduced legislation. Where else would you be able to get your hands on all of this information in just one place?”
Presenting at several seminars during Automechanika Birmingham 2017, Andy Savva held his audiences with his usual captivating and upliftingly positive views on the talents of the trade and with the back-up of OESAA, help protect the interests of motor businesses.
Q - What were the highlights of your presentation?
A - The essence really is first of all; that like-minded Tier 1 parts manufacturers have come together as a group to form OESAA (Original Equipment Suppliers Aftermarket Association) to try to dispel some of the claims made by some aftermarket parts manufacturers suppliers that their parts are of matching quality.
My view is that because the industry at the moment doesn’t have a standard i.e. parts are not certified, everybody’s perception of quality varies massively.
There are so many aftermarket parts manufacturers suppliers where, when a part is copied, there is always an influence of price, and I think when there’s always an influence of price, there is always a compromise somewhere. As a garage owner, and as someone who wants to give an expert service, value for money, and do the job right, I advocate fitting the same parts that were fitted in the factory originally, the OE part. Then, at least I know it has passed through some kind of a process or assurance to reach a level that is suitable for the likes of BMW/Mercedes/Citroen etc. to use in the production of their vehicles. And that is how I base it. OESAA has come together to try and urge people to listen, to give them an opportunity to understand that some aftermarket companies and their components are really not good enough. And, the price gap between an aftermarket and an OE part is shrinking.
Q - How does this affect the market?
A - For example, the difference in clutch prices could be £45 or £65, so when the job takes four to five hours, is it really worth the risk? The fact is most garage owners using these aftermarket parts are not even making sufficient profit on these parts; Our industry, as a whole, has always been very price-sensitive. Consumers come to us already in that price-sensitive mode.
nother frustration for me is the constant use by most garage owners who use terminology like fully-skilled technicians, fully-equipped workshop; it’s impossible for the consumer to differentiate. ‘Fully-skilled’ is a myth as our industry is an environment of continuous learning. By associating yourself with OESAA members and OE parts, you have the ability tap into their academies and the people who physically make the parts, along with cost-effective (and sometimes even free) training.
Why shouldn’t we, as garage owners or technicians, tap into that? I’m only as good as my stakeholders; that’s my staff and my parts suppliers. The only commodity that garages sell is labour, parts are a by-product of how much labour you sell. The garage business environment is already challenged by the lack of skill across our industry, why would anyone make the job harder and possibly leave themselves vulnerable by not using the right OE part?
Q - Why is now a good time to do this?
A - Chiefly due to availability. Availability has never been better thanks to the factors & distributors throughout the country stocking parts from OE suppliers, allowing for same day delivery and in most cases within an hour. When I worked 20 years ago, you got what you wanted the next day; There is no excuse anymore.
Q - What has the interaction been like during your presentations?
A - Our interaction with audiences throughout Automechanika has been fantastic. Why? Because I want to interact, I want to ask, I want to get opinion, I want to be challenged. Let’s have a constructive discussion. In mostly all cases of any product or service if you buy cheap, you buy twice, end of. It’s no different in our industry.
